The film is based on the manga series written by Asumiko Nakamura. Doukyuusei falls under the genres of romance, drama, and slice-of-life, presenting a tender and heartfelt story. It was produced by the animation studio A-1 Pictures, known for their exceptional work in the industry.
With its stunning animation, well-developed characters, and touching narrative, Doukyuusei has captivated audiences around the world and continues to be cherished by anime enthusiasts.
Doukyuusei tells the enchanting story of Rihito Sajou and Hikaru Kusakabe, two high school students who find themselves unexpectedly drawn to each other. Rihito is a diligent and reserved honor student, while Hikaru is a free-spirited and talented musician.
Despite their contrasting personalities, they discover a shared passion for music when they are assigned as temporary choir partners. As they spend more time together, their connection deepens, blossoming into a tender romance.
However, they must navigate the complexities of their relationship within the confines of a conservative school environment and their own insecurities. With a backdrop of school activities, concerts, and rehearsals, Doukyuusei beautifully explores the joys and challenges of first love, capturing the bittersweet essence of adolescence.
Is Doukyuusei Worth Watching?
When I tell you I loved this shounen-ai, that would be the understatement of the century! Doukyuusei has to be one of the best shounen-ai I’ve seen so far. Not counting Stranger by the beach of course and Saezuru tori Wa Habatakunai the manga but you get the point.
There is nothing better than an anime that has no forced drama. In my book this anime is a clean 10/10! But for those who might still be like… “I remain unconvinced”, here are all the other reasons why this is one of my favorite anime movies of all time. Or at least top 5 :).

What You Might Hate About Doukyuusei
While Doukyuusei has garnered widespread acclaim, it is not without some criticisms. Here are a few common points of criticism that have been raised:
1. Limited Exploration of LGBTQ+ Themes:
Although the anime presents a same-sex romance, some viewers have felt that it could have delved deeper into the exploration of LGBTQ+ themes. They desired a more comprehensive examination of the challenges and societal dynamics surrounding the characters’ sexuality and their experiences in a heteronormative world.
2. Lack of Conflict and Tension:
While the gentle and realistic portrayal of teenage love is one of the anime’s strengths, some viewers have expressed a desire for more conflicts or obstacles to create tension and heighten the emotional stakes of the story. They felt that additional challenges would have added further depth to the narrative.
It’s important to note that criticisms are subjective and can vary from person to person. Despite these criticisms, Doukyuusei continues to be highly regarded and beloved by many for its genuine portrayal of romance, beautiful animation, and relatable characters.
In conclusion, Doukyuusei is a captivating anime that beautifully captures the essence of first love and adolescence. With its heartfelt and realistic portrayal of romance, well-developed characters, stunning animation, and resonant themes, it has garnered widespread acclaim.
While it has faced some criticisms regarding its pacing, side character development, exploration of LGBTQ+ themes, and lack of conflict, these points do not overshadow the overall impact and appeal of the anime.
